It was her first public appearance since she was run over by a horse while walking near her home last month and taken to hospital Brave Princess Anne said she cannot remember anything about the incident involving a horse nearly three weeks ago, in which she suffered head injuries.

The Princess Royal today returned to royal duties for the first time since she was concussed in a shocking accident.

Princess Anne, was seen with a bruise over her left eye and heavy make up on her face as she attended the Riding Disabled Association RDA national championships at Hartpury College and Hartpury College in Gloucestershire.

The king's sister was hospitalised for five nights after being hit by a horse's head or leg while walking near her Gatcombe Park home last month.

The princess had to cancel nine plans while she was in hospital, including a trip to Canada to honour war heroes.

Wearing an olive tweed suit and navy blue hat and gloves, she greeted RDA officials before heading into a large indoor arena to present 23 awards to the charity's coaches and volunteers.

Chairs were provided for officials but the princess chose to stand while she chatted with the winners as they received their certificates.

RDA UK chairman Helena Vega Lozano said. As soon as she got out of the car she said. 'I can't remember anything.

Ms Vega Lozano added. It's very encouraging and inspiring to have her here. The Princess, Patron of the RDA since 1971, and its president in 1986, spoke to guests.

Her attendance at the event, the first day of the RDA's three day national championships, had always been planned.

However, the engagement was cut short as the princess continued her recovery.

The club is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year and the princess has worked for the club for many years.

Since the incident, which left her with a concussion and minor head injury, the princess has been recuperating at her home in Gloucestershire, following standard concussion protocol.

Palace officials said she will continue her rehabilitation at home as she returns to public appearances.

Anne's medical team said her head injury was consistent with a possible impact from the head or leg of a horse, but that the exact details of how the incident occurred were unclear as she had a concussion.

A rescue helicopter was called to take the princess to hospital but she ended up being transported by road after being treated by rescuers at the scene.

She was treated at Southmead Hospital in Bristol for minor head injuries and concussion. RDA chief executive Michael Bishop said. Her work with the RDA is very welcome and well known, adding.

The princess was in top form and it was great to see her again. She was very engaging when talking to all the volunteers and participants and had some amusing comments.
