Just pry off a piece! Sometimes you have to jam your shovel in there to break up the roots but often they just come right out when you separate them with your hands after digging one out.

These plants are about $60 where I live so this is a very worthwhile investment. I did this with a different one too and saved a lot of money for this client. This is sometimes necessary if a plant has gotten too big for the space. As always, water a lot after planting, to get it established. We did this when it was 85 degrees in the middle of the day (not optimal but totally possible!). Don’t tell me you can’t do this too!💪

Note: this is a macrophylla type (the kind with the big leaves and the big blue or pink blooms, or lacecap). Don’t go trying this with a panicle, like a limelight, but you can do this with an arborescens, like an annabelle or incrediball. Or a climbing hydrangea.
