The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of 12.69 acres of property in Dorchester Swamp. The UTRCA now owns 685.21 acres of this Provincially Significant Wetland.

Alex Shivas, Manager of Lands and Facilities at the UTRCA said, “The UTRCA first started acquiring property in Dorchester Swamp in the 1950s and by 1964 owned 350 acres. Since 1964, an additional 335.21 acres have been acquired. We continue to acquire properties at this Provincially Significant Wetland as they come available through donation or purchase.”

The UTRCA recognizes the importance of Dorchester Swamp for many environmental reasons:
• reduces flooding through water retention
• improves water quality through filtration
• protects biodiversity
• provides habitat for wildlife

Dorchester Swamp is home to more than 600 species of vascular plants, is the largest habitat for breeding birds in Middlesex County, and supports one of the few cold water streams in the Thames River watershed. Dorchester Swamp is also the source of municipal water for the Village of Dorchester.

Dorchester Swamp is designated as a Class 1 Provincially Significant Wetland, an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI), and a Carolinian Canada site. This swamp is one of few remaining large wetlands in Southern Ontario.

Ownership of Dorchester Swamp is shared between the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, Middlesex County, and private landowners. These owners, along with interested agencies and community members use The Dorchester Swamp Management Strategy to guide decision making for the future of this wetland.

Dorchester Swamp is located just east of the Village of Dorchester in Middlesex County.
