Ask anybody who uses Twitter and they will tell you that its appeal is that is one of the easiest social media platforms you can use. 
It’s easy to connect with people who are interested in the same topics as you. And you don’t have to really know somebody personally to “follow” them or get them to be one of your “followers”.  In most cases, all you need is a common interest.
With Twitter, you only have 140 characters to use in your message, known as a “Tweet.” But it’s the brevity of the messages that make the site so appealing.
People can browse through dozens or even hundreds of Tweets in just a few minutes and read the ones that contain information they find the most interesting.
You also can include links within your Tweets that can be connected to web pages, images, screen shots, audio files, videos, or practically any other digital format you can imagine.
When you open a free Twitter account, you can begin to explore the site looking for different users who interest you.
Most people begin with their family and friends, then gravitate toward their favorite celebrities, such as movie stars and sports heroes.
Tweets from their contacts will then appear on their Twitter feed. But to navigate the site beyond your feed, you need to use hashtags.
The hashtag is a tool Twitter uses to group related Tweets. For example, if you are interested in NASCAR racing and want to find the latest Tweets about that sport, you can simply search for #NASCAR and you will instantly gain access to every Tweet that featured this hashtag, regardless of whether you are following the people who posted them or not. 
This is a valuable tool for Internet marketers because it makes it easy to find people who potentially would be interested in the niche you work in or the specific products and services you are promoting.  And while Twitter won’t allow you to directly promote affiliate products to its users, you can Tweet links to other pages, such as your website or squeeze page where you can capture the personal information of your contacts and push them into your sales funnel.
Let’s use the earlier example and assume you are promoting NASCAR-related products. 
The simple hashtag instantly connects you with thousands of people who have already shown an interest in the sport and who are highly likely to be open to the types of products you are promoting. To use this to your advantage, you can send out your own Tweets providing high-value, usable content that NASCAR fans would find helpful and post it using the #NASCAR hashtag, instantly connecting you with anybody who types in this Twitter search. 
Then Twitter will routinely update you anytime somebody on Twitter mentions the hashtag #NASCAR, allowing you to reach out to those users, follow them and invite them to follow you as well.
Another type of hashtag you can use to build the reputation of your brand on Twitter is the hook-in hashtag. This is when you offer some sort of helpful or actionable content and in the Tweet include a hashtag such as “#FoodforThought” or “#NewsYouCanUse.”  
These hook-in hashtags can then be used for short-term Twitter conversations. 
People can contribute to the dialogue with their own posts, questions or comments and include the same hook-in hashtag. Then every time a new Tweet is posted that includes that hashtag, you can easily find it and the other participants can easily find you.
If you hit upon hashtag that hits a common nerve, it can easily become a Twitter hashtag meme. Popular memes can often take on a life of their own. It’s even possible for a Tweet you post to be re-Tweeted so many times that it goes viral.
For example, recently the #Alexfromtarget hashtag quickly went viral.
