Each year, May 1 marks International Workers Day – popularly known as “May Day.”

In 2025, the international movement saw passionate citizens staging protests across the globe, calling not only for better labour protection, but for action against U.S. President Donald Trump and the economic unrest he has ignited in his 100 days in office.

Tens of thousands of protesters united in anger against several of Trump’s policies, including his tariffs against nearly every other nation, strict deportation measures against immigrants, and a lack of swift action in putting an end to the Israel-Hamas war.

In several European and South American countries, demonstrations were so large that riot police got involved, some of which resorted to shooting demonstrators with water cannons. More than 400 arrests were reported in the Philippines and Turkey.
