Hello everyone, I'm Kelly Temple, Dealer Principal from Eastside Kia in Calgary Alberta! Today, we're going to be taking a look at the impressive 2014 Kia Optima Hybrid.

In general, the Hybrid consumer is someone who is environmentally minde and is probably a value-based buyer who is looking for exceptional fuel economy.

With the Optima -- Hybrid, it can also be someone who is looking for sporty, attractive and comfortable design.

Hybrid Technology:

The Hybrid is the first ever electric motor/gas engine hybrid to be sold in North America. There are times when the vehicle will be driven with zero gasoline consumption and produce zero emissions.

There are 3 types of hybrid engines:
• Mild hybrid
o Limited hybrid utilization and cannot provide all-electric propulsion.
• Plug-In Hybrid

o Nissan Leaf or Chev Volt
o Vehicle must be charged through an electrical outlet
• Full Hybrid
o The Kia Hybrid is a full hybrid
o A traditional vehicle with an electric motor that can propel the vehicle at times or in combination with a gas engine.
o A full hybrid charges its own battery via electric motor or gasoline engine.

Driving Characteristics:

You may be surprised to find that when you start the vehicle, the gasoline engine doesn't come on when the battery is fully charged. The electric motor may propel the car without the gasoline engine.

Dashboard:

There is a gauge on the dash that shows you where the vehicle is drawing its power from: the battery or the gasoline engine.

Advantages:

And the Kia Optima Hybrid has some real advantages over other Hybrids in the market:
• Lithium-Polymer Battery which is one of the smallest, lightest and most advanced hybrid batteries in the world.
• Hybrid engine clutch which allows for seamless transition between the electric motor and gas engine...only 6/10's of a second.
• It has a traditional 6 speed CVT transmission that allows for desirable shift feeling instead of a shiftless 'golf cart' ride.
• It uses a regenerative braking system that helps charge the lithium battery by converting kinetic energy into electricity.
• You don't have to sacrifice power...Optima Hybrid produces a combined 199 HP.

Trim Levels:

The hybrid comes in three trim levels:
• Hybrid LX -- starts at $31,580
• Hybrid EX -- starts at $35,180
• Hybrid EX Premium -- Starts at $37,680

Standard Equipment:

They Hybrid comes with more standard equipment than the gas powered Optima including:
• Push button start
• Smart Key
• UVO infotainment system
• Dual climate control
• Cooling glove box

New Features for 2014 include:

• LED Light Bar Tail Lights
• Redesigned alloy wheels
• A more areo-dynamic bumper and trunk lid

Road Test:

Besides the smooth quiet ride, Optima-Hybrid has incredible fuel economy.

• The LX Hybrid consumers just 4.9 Litres / 100 km's of driving on the highway and just 5.4 Litres / 100 km's of city driving.

• In 2011, the Optima Hybrid set a Guiness World Record for fuel efficiency.
