Arsenic is a naturally occurring carcinogen implicated with bladder, prostate, and kidney cancer. Humans are most commonly exposed to arsenic through contaminated drinking water. As a result, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enacted legislation in the year 2000 to reduce arsenic in drinking water from 50 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb. However, there remains concern that the 10ppb cutoff is not stringent enough. Studies have suggested deleterious effects of arsenic exposure even at low levels. This study therefore sought to describe the impact of the EPA legislation, and whether low levels of arsenic are associated with incident bladder, prostate and kidney cancers within the state of Washington (WA).
