In the early days of bicycles, a significant design problem arose from the combination of two features: the placement of the pedals on the front wheel and the high wheel design. These early bicycles, also known as "penny-farthings" or "high-wheelers," had pedals attached directly to the front wheel, which presented several challenges.

One significant issue was the difficulty in mounting and dismounting the bicycle. Due to the large size of the front wheel and the lack of a chain drive system, riders had to physically climb up onto the seat and then hoist themselves onto the high saddle, which could be quite challenging and even dangerous. Dismounting was also problematic, as riders had to carefully lower themselves down from the high saddle without losing balance or getting caught in the spokes of the large wheel.

Another problem was the risk of accidents and injuries. The high center of gravity created by the large front wheel made these bicycles inherently unstable, especially at high speeds or during sharp turns. Riders were more susceptible to falling over the handlebars or losing control, resulting in serious injuries. Additionally, the lack of effective braking systems made it difficult to slow down or stop the bicycle safely, further adding to the safety concerns.

The combination of pedals on the front wheel and the high wheel design in early bicycles posed significant challenges in terms of mounting and dismounting, stability, and safety. As a result, further design innovations were required to address these issues, leading to the development of safer and more practical bicycle designs, such as the chain drive system and the introduction of safety bicycles with smaller wheels and improved braking mechanisms.
