Is hip replacement surgery a major operation?

Hello, I'm Dr. Dan Albright with Raleigh Orthopedics.

The answer's - yes. A total hip replacement takes about an hour to do it; it takes you about three months to get over it - depending on who you are it could be a month or two if you're younger or more athletic.

But it's a major operation and sometimes we gloss over that. So it's something you really have to get prepped for. Hopefully, trim down a little weight before surgery. Hopefully, workout in a pool with a therapist before surgery or a stationary bike, but there are risks.

There is a small risk of a blood clot. A small risk for dislocation with a hip replacement, but the risks are small. I just don't want my patients going into surgery thinking this is going to be quick and they are back at work in three days. A lot of people need weeks to a month or two to stay out of work - depending on who you are, depending on what your job is.

Everyone is an individual, and each person has a different medical history, different body type, and I'm happy to individualize answers and give you more information so please feel free to contact me. Come on in at any time. Call us through our appointment line. Thanks.
