Get ready to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month with the Birsa Chatterjee Quartet on Thursday, May 2, 2024! Check out this fantastic saxophonist as he takes you through his life journey through musical storytelling. Birsa originally performed for us on our very first AAPI Jazz Fest in 2022!

About Birsa Chatterjee:

Birsa Chatterjee is a graduate of Oberlin College (BA, 2019) and The Juilliard School (MA, 2021) for performance degrees in Jazz saxophone. Birsa plays regularly with groups such as Ulysses Owen’s Gen Y Band, the Tyreek McDole Quintet, the JAZZ HOUSE All-Stars, Alex Laurenzi’s Water Lilies Suite and has played with NEA Jazz Master Billy Hart in his quartet. Chatterjee has played in venues like Carnegie Hall, the Blue Note Jazz Club, Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, NJPAC, The Django, The Jazz Cruise and in countries like Peru, Bahrain and India aside from the United States. Most recently Chatterjee has been forging new ground as a composer blending together authentic elements of Indian Classical music and Jazz and has continued to play at venues like The Jazz Gallery, the AAPI Jazz Festival, the Montclair Jazz Festival, the Jamaica Jazz Festival and has taken the group on tour to California. Chatterjee performs around the country and has a lot of teaching experience with students of all age ranges/levels. He has taught at institutions like Jazz at Lincoln Center and has been a guest speaker at The Juilliard School while currently teaching for the world renowned music education program Jazz House Kids, as well as teaching privately in New York City and New Jersey.



About AAPI Jazz Fest:

The Institute of Jazz Studies and Yardbird Productions are excited to present the 3rd Annual AAPI Jazz Fest held at Express Newark in the historic Hahne & Co. building located at 54 Halsey Street in Newark, NJ. This year’s festival will feature 6 Asian American and Pacific Islander jazz bands from around the world. Artists will include headliner Linda Oh feat. Fabian Almazan and Akiko Tsuruga Quartet feat. Jerry Weldon. The AAPI Jazz Fest is the only one of its kind on the East Coast.
