The Most Common Sound in English - The Schwa | Easy English Pronunciation

Even though there are only 5 vowels in English, there are around 20 vowel sounds. Different combinations of vowels and consonants require us to produce different sounds. Do you know which is the most common vowel sound in English? In this video, I tell you everything you need to know about The schwa.

Let's address one question before we start. Why do I need to worry about pronunciation? Well, the answer to that question depends on the individual. If you mostly use English for email writing, then improving your grammar is probably your most important concern, and you aren't too worried about pronouncing words correctly. But how about if you regularly need to communicate with spoken English at work or school? Well, in this case having decent pronunciation is crucial. There's no point in knowing all the rules of the English language, if people cannot understand you while you speak due to your accent. While having perfect pronunciation may be a personal goal, for most people just being understandable is what they are trying to achieve, and this video will help you with that.

The schwa is a very short, unstressed short u sound. Why is the schwa so common in English? Well, there's a couple of reasons. Number 1 is that English speakers are pretty lazy!... at least in how we speak. We always try to find ways to blend consonants and words together, which leads us to making the simplest sounds possible, and the schwa is the easiest vowel sound to make. The second reason is the English language is stress-timed, meaning that we stress different syllables and say them at different lengths depending on the word.
