"Claire, I need to be honest," Vanessa said, her voice carrying concern mixed with condescension. "Michael and I are worried you might feel uncomfortable at the gala. I stirred my coffee, watching morning light through my modest apartment windows. "I see."

I thought about yesterday's briefing where I'd presented East African trade route analysis to senior diplomats. Where Ambassador Omondi from Kenya had specifically requested my expertise on regional development.
