Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacob’s Weekly Update.

TRANSCRIPT:

“It’s Friday. Time for another weekly update. This week, I delivered meals with our friends from Mobile Meals, welcomed the Special Olympics Tennessee to the Three Ridges golf course, and helped cut the ribbon at Mesa Associates business expansion.

Our third annual Night of Champions, which recognizes Knox County student-athletes who brought home state championships this year, was this week at the Civic Auditorium. This year was our biggest yet, with over 350 people in attendance. Thank you to everyone who attended and our team who made it happen. A special thank you to the Knoxville Ice Bears Foundation for helping to host the event.

Tomorrow, we are partnering with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to host Free Fishing Day at IC King Park and the Cove at Concord Park. The event is geared toward families and children, allowing those without a license to fish for the day. It’s a great event for the whole family and gives everyone the opportunity to have fun and spend some time together outside. We hope you'll join us! Again, that’s tomorrow from 8 a.m. until noon at IC King Park and at the Cove.

Today, Knox County elected officials are pitching in to help construct a new Habitat for Humanity home in the Ellen Glen subdivision. Dubbed the bipartisan build, we’re working in honor of the late Dwight Kissel, the first Knox County Mayor and a Republican, and the late Tank Strickland, a former Knox County Commission Chair, and a Democrat. What a great way to honor their commitment to building our community.

Now, I’m sure that we’ll work up an appetite working on that home so it’s a good thing that today is National Doughnut Day. Occurring on the first Friday in June, National Doughnut Day's history is fascinating. It was created by the Chicago Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers in World War I and as a fundraiser to help families during the Great Depression.

Nowadays, you can get about any kind of doughnut imaginable, from crullers to cronuts. Check out my Twitter poll to vote on your favorite. Until next Friday, I hope everyone has a great week.”
