This webinar is organised by the Scotland's Rock Art Project (ScRAP) and is the tenth of 12 monthly webinars presented live throughout 2021 by experts from Britain and Europe on themes relevant to prehistoric rock art in Scotland.

Northern South America is a globally recognized hotspot of Indigenous cultural and biological diversity. Centering on the Orinoco, this talk will present the results of rock art surveys in the Serranía de La Lindosa (Guaviare Department, Colombia) and discuss the significance of this extraordinary record. It will consider the La Lindosa paintings in the context of the peopling of America, as well as more recent ethnographic perspectives on Indigenous art. The potential of new methods for large-scale, comparative studies of rock art will also be presented, especially their potential to support our understanding of socio-ecological dynamics in deep time.

Dr Philip Riris is a Lecturer in Archaeological and Palaeoenvironmental Modelling at the Institute for Modelling Socio-Environmental Transitions, Bournemouth University, UK. He earned his PhD from the University of Southampton in 2015. Between 2015 and 2019 he held postdoctoral positions at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, latterly a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship, as well as a Visiting Fellowship at the Sainsburys Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia. His research focuses on socio-environmental relationships in the ancient past, in particular population history, food production systems, and landscape archaeology in tropical South America. He has also contributed toward rock art studies in the Amazonian and Orinocan lowlands.
