The Civil War was perhaps the last great conflict celebrated by painters, because this struggle was the first great war memorialized by the photographers, including Mathew Brady and many others. Maybe American painters perhaps realized that this was the last time for them to record a visual history of a major war.

We will learn using paintings and lithographs about:
• John Brown and his Raid of Harper’s Ferry.
• South Carolina bombarding Fort Sumter.
• General Winfield Scott and his Anaconda Plan.

We will view paintings on:
• Early battles: Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Shiloh, Peninsula Campaign, Peninsular Campaign, Battle of Malvern Hill, Battle of Second Manassas, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, and Battle of Chancellorsville.
• Later Battles: Battle of Vicksburg, Battle of Chickamauga, Battle of Chattanooga, capture of New Orleans, Picket’s Charge, Battle of Gettysburg, Storming Fort Wagner, Battle of Franklin, Battle of Atlanta, General Sherman’s March to the Sea, Battle of the Wilderness, Battle of Spotsylvania, Battle of Petersburg, Battle of Five Forks, and the Fall of Richmond.
• The Emancipation Proclamation, Surrender at Appomattox, and Assassination of Lincoln.
• Civil War forts including Fort Clinch, Fort McAllister, Fort Pulaski, Fort Jefferson, and Fort Zachary Taylor.
• Abraham Lincoln, General Ulysses Grant, Robert E Less, and Frederick Douglass and their role in the Civil War.
