6.5m SCOW Sail Boat Multi Chine Hull for Low Cost Marine Plywood Epoxy construction Architecture & Design Andrei Rochian
I designed this version of the 6.5m scow sail boat multi chine hull
The hull shell (sides ; bottom and transom ) is built from 8 flat panel components that are cut with the CNC from marine plywood
Specifications:
Length Overall (LOA): 6.5 m (6500 mm)
Beam (B): 3.0 m (3000 mm)
Displacement: 1400 kg (with 400 kg of ballast at the bottom of the swing keel)
Draft (Without Keel): 200 mm
Draft (With Keel Lowered): 1842 mm
Waterline Length (LWL): 5.8 m (5800 mm)
Maximum Waterline Beam: 2.3 m (2300 mm)
Waterplane Area: 1.0 m²
Center of Buoyancy: 3.4 m from the bow
Center of Flotation: 3.6 m from the bow
Total Surface Area (Hull, Deck, and Cabin): 61.5 m²
Mast Height (Above Deck): 9 m
Sail Plan:
Main Sail Area: 20 m²
Forward Triangular Sail (Jib or Genoa) Area: 12 m²
Total Sail Area: 32 m²

With a 9-meter mast supporting a 32 m² sail plan, the scow sailboat has a well-balanced sail configuration for its size. This setup provides enough sail area to drive the boat efficiently under a wide range of wind conditions
Power to Displacement Ratio: With the 32 m² of sail area and a displacement of 1400 kg, the sail area-to-displacement ratio can be calculated to estimate how much power the sails provide relative to the boat’s weight.

This is a moderate ratio for a cruising or performance-oriented small sailboat, meaning the boat will perform well in light to moderate wind conditions. The scow’s wide beam provides stability, allowing it to handle larger sail areas efficiently, while the deeper keel provides lateral resistance for upwind sailing.
3. Ballast and Stability Analysis:
The 400 kg ballast positioned at the lower end of the swing keel the ballast creates a significant righting moment, which resists the heeling forces from the wind.
