An Untold Production presents a Story-Telling Documentary Podcast from inside the Ancient Hill of Assam - the Deopahar.

In this Story-Telling episode, we walk into the deep forest of Deopahar Forest Reserve, to revisit the ancient history of the state, how it still reminds of 1,000-year-old history.

Deopahar, located in Numaligarh in the Golaghat district of Assam, India, is an archaeological site of profound historical and cultural importance. Known as "The Hills of the Gods" (derived from "Deo" meaning gods and "Pahar" meaning hills), this site stands as a testament to Assam’s ancient heritage, blending natural beauty with intricate remnants of a bygone era.

Deopahar’s history is rooted in Assam’s medieval and ancient past, with its most prominent features dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries AD.

The site is home to the ruins of a stone temple, believed to have been dedicated to Lord Shiva, along with a remarkable collection of sculptures that reflect the artistic and spiritual traditions of the time.

The architectural style of the temple, though incomplete or damaged—possibly due to the devastating Assam earthquake of 1897—points to influences from the Gupta and Pala dynasties, which were instrumental in shaping the region’s cultural landscape during the early medieval period.
