The Brough Superior SS 100 was a motorcycle designed and built by George Brough in Nottingham in 1924. Each specimen was produced to meet specific customer requirements (for example, each handlebar was made by hand), combining frames produced by Brough with engines supplied by other manufacturers; there were 69 SS100s produced in 1925 at the cost of 170 pounds at the time. The bike, after a magazine of the time had so defined it, was advertised by Brough, without the permission of the car manufacturer, like the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles and each motorcycle had a guaranteed speed of 100 miles per hour (160 km/h), from which the abbreviation 100 distinguishes it. The SS100 (Super Sports 100) was built using components chosen from many different suppliers. The first engine, used between 1924 and 1936, was a KTOR of JAP, built by J.A. Prestwich is designed by Val Page, V-shaped with double camshaft. From 1936 a modified Matchless engine was used. The change was the 3-speed 4-STUD from the Sturmey-Archer. Brough had developed features of the Harley-Davidson fork and produced its own version produced by the Castle Fork and Accessories Company which combined a light weight with resistance; this made it one of the main components to make the SS100 very manageable. On April 27, 2008 at the Stafford Motorcycle Show the Bonhams auction house sold a Brough Superior SS100 of 1934 at £ 166,500 - a value that sets a world record for a British auction. A new sales record was established on 22 October 2010 when a Brough Superior SS100 of 1929 was sold to the Haynes International Motor Museum. The bike has reached the value of 286,000 pounds.
