For more than three decades – not to mention countless albums, EPs, mixes and singles – Leeds-born DJ and producer George Herbert Evelyn has been better known as Nightmares on Wax. Initially formed as a group project with John Halnon in 1988 when the pair were still teenagers, Nightmares on Wax had long become Evelyn’s sole moniker by the time he released the album Carboot Soul, in 1999.

In April 2024, to celebrate Carboot Soul’s 25th anniversary, Evelyn joined forces with The Outlook Orchestra for a special live performance of the much-loved album here in the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. Ahead of that performance we sat down with him for this interview looking back at his career, his influences, the original evolution of Carboot Soul and the development of this milestone celebration.

We also follow Evelyn as he takes his takes his first ever look inside the auditorium, having told friends and fellow musicians not to send him any photos or footage of it beforehand. ‘I’ve heard so many amazing things about this venue, that I want to walk into that room and I want to feel it’.
