นกแก้วโม่ง Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria)

นกแก้วโม่ง Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria) มีถิ่นกำเนิดในแถบทวีปเอเชีย ตลอดจนประเทศในคาบสมุทรอินโดจีน รวมถึงประเทศไทย ซึ่งพบนกแก้วโม่งที่อาศัยอยู่ตามธรรมชาติในหลายพื้นที่ รวมถึงจังหวัดนนทบุรี

นกแก้วโม่ง อยู่รวมกันเป็นฝูง กินยอดไม้ ลูกไม้ ผลไม้ มีการผสมพันธุ์ จับคู่ วางไข่ ช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายน-ธันวาคม มักเลือกที่จะทำรังตามโพรงไม้ใหญ่ ๆ เช่น ต้นยางนา ที่มีความสูงมากกว่า 20 เมตร โดยใช้วิธีแทะหรือขุดโพรงบนต้นไม้เนื้ออ่อน หรืออาจเลือกใช้โพรงไม้เก่าที่มีอยู่เดิม

สถานภาพการอนุรักษ์ในระดับประเทศ อยู่ในสถานภาพใกล้สูญพันธุ์ (Endangered) ปัจจุบันมีความพยายามติดตั้งรังเทียม ปลูกต้นไม้ เพื่อให้นกแก้วโม่งได้ใช้เป็นถิ่นอาศัย ขยายพันธุ์ เพื่อเป็นการอนุรักษ์นกแก้วโม่งไม่ให้สูญพันธุ์

Nok Kaew Moang or Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria) is a medium-sized parrot originated in Asia, especially IndoChina Peninsula and Thailand, where it can be found in natural habitats including Nonthaburi Province.

The Alexandrine Parakeet usually lives in flocks and eats a variety of seeds, fruits, nuts and buds. It prefers to build nest inside a tree hollow in the big tree such as “Yang Na” (Dipterocarpus alatus), with more than 20 meters height.

At present, the Alexandrine Parakeet is listed as Endangered Species according to national conservation status. There are a number of efforts initiated, including making artificial nests and tree planting, in order to provide home and breeding site for this beautiful vibrant-colored bird, and prevent its extinction.
