Lampreys: Survivors from the Ancient Seas

Lampreys are jawless fish that have existed for hundreds of millions of years with little evolutionary change. Their long, eel-like bodies and lack of true jaws set them apart from most modern fish, earning them the title of “living fossils.”

The adult sea lamprey, the largest of the lamprey species, leads a parasitic lifestyle. Using a round, sucker-like mouth filled with sharp teeth, it attaches itself to other fish and feeds on their blood and bodily fluids. This can weaken or even kill the host fish, especially in ecosystems where lampreys are invasive.

Lampreys have a fascinating life cycle. Adults migrate from the ocean into freshwater rivers to spawn. Once they lay their eggs, they die shortly after. The eggs hatch into ammocoetes—unique, filter-feeding larvae that burrow into riverbeds and remain there for several years before transforming into adults.

This unusual larval stage is found only in lampreys, adding to their mystery and biological importance. Despite their fearsome reputation, lampreys play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of aquatic environments.
