Episode 63: Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb

It can be said that Boss is well known for their high quality Reverb and Delay pedals. The RV-5 continues with that tradition, but is it a worthy successor in the famous RV line? Let’s find out!

Boss RV-5 was released as a replacement for the RV-3, which was, and still is, a much heralded reverb pedal. The main difference between the two, are their respective modes. The RV-3 has 11 modes, including 4 Reverb + Delay Modes, and 4 Delay Modes. The inclusion of Delay is what separates the RV-3 and RV-5. Curiously, the RV-5 ditches the Delay all together, and focused only on reverbs. The 6 Modes in the RV-5 are: Spring, Plate, Hall, Room, Gate, and Modulate. Most all of them sound really nice, except for the Gate mode. I’m just not a fan. The Modulate and Plate Modes are my favorite. The Modulate Mode adds a nice bit of modulation on the reverb, which creates a seemingly bigger space. The Plate Mode is just a great all around sounding reverb that would sound awesome in the studio. The Tone knob helps you tailor the EQ of the verb to taste. I like it to take away a little high end on the verb, which helps smooth things out. Aside from the differences in Modes, the RV-5 also has stereo inputs and outputs; the RV-3 only has stereo outputs.

Ok, so which do I prefer? I will say, the RV-5 has a much better selection of reverbs, as compared to the RV-3. But for versatility, the RV-3 has the RV-5 beat with the inclusion of delay. It’s a tough call. I like them both, but if I had to choose one, the RV-3, really just for the delay.
