Erin Patterson and her husband, Simon Patterson, were separated. In July 2023, Erin decided to invite Simon’s family over to her home for lunch.

She prepared a dish called Beef Wellington. However, she included Death Cap mushrooms—one of the deadliest fungi in the world in the meal. Joining her at the table were Simon’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, along with two other relatives, Ian and Heather Wilkinson.

In a strange turn of events, Simon backed out at the last minute and didn't attend. Erin also did not serve the food to her children.

Tragedy struck shortly after. Within days, three of the guests died. Only Ian Wilkinson survived, though he had to spend months in the hospital recovering.

Police became suspicious because Erin was the only person who ate the meal and remained perfectly healthy. Their suspicions grew when she was caught trying to secretly get rid of a food dehydrator she had used.

Erin Patterson is now facing multiple murder charges as her trial continues.
