Heritage matters when finding a blood stem cell donor match. Because matching is based on HLA tissue typing, which is influenced by ethnicity, patients are more likely to find a matching donor who shares their ethnic background. Unfortunately, there is not enough ethnic diversity in the global donor pool, meaning that people from diverse ethnic backgrounds have a lower chance of finding a match.
