During a mid-October road trip through Yellowstone National Park a mild snow storm rolled through, leaving some roads closed and the trails covered in snow. Luckily the temperatures stayed cold and not much ice formed allowing us to do the lollipop loop hike from Biscuit Basin to Mystic Falls.

THIS HIKE
Doing the full lollipop, or maybe it's better to call it dumbbell loop, is only 3.5 miles and 700 feet of elevation gain. If there is snow on the ground I would highly recommend you use spikes (yaktrax or similar) at the minimum and possibly snowshoes depending on the snow depth. Biscuit Basin seemed to be one of the less popular thermal areas during our visit so take your time to enjoy the wonderful colors, sound and not so wonderful smells of the springs and geysers. Once you leave biscuit basin the trail follows the Little Firehole River for a bit before reaching Mystic falls. Take in the views before switch backing to the top of the ridge. After heading east from the Fairy Creek trail junction you'll come to a magnificent overlook of Biscuit Basin and the Upper Geyser Basin, even all the way to the Old Faithful Lodge & Inn. Take care as you switch back down the trail and head back towards biscuit basin.

I would highly recommend you carry bear spray as even though this trail is popular bears do frequent the area.
