During World War II, thousands of Black Americans moved to Oregon for jobs in the shipyards and war industries. That migration dramatically increased Portland’s Black population and helped establish the Albina District as a thriving center of Black culture, businesses, churches, and community.

But the story doesn’t stop there. Albina’s history also includes segregation, redlining, urban renewal, and displacement that reshaped the neighborhood for decades. In this episode of TWB, we explore how opportunity, resilience, and struggle all came together to create one of the most important Black communities in the Pacific Northwest.
