In the summer of 480 BC, a Persian army marched toward Greece. According to the ancient historian Herodotus, the army was so enormous that its footsteps shook the ground, and its thirsty soldiers turned rivers into sad rivulets. In late summer, the Persians approached the pass of Thermopylae at the Malian Gulf. There, the Spartan king Leonidas awaited them with several thousand soldiers, determined to block their way to Greece. The Battle of Thermopylae has become one of the most famous events of antiquity through politics and pop culture—most notably Zack Snyder’s movie 300. The story is epic and gripping but also highly dramatized and overdrawn. This video examines the accuracy of the popular story and explores what really happened at Thermopylae.
