Our stories are the walking bibles of our culture, according to GrayHawk Perkins. Perkins, of the United Houma Nation, never saw himself as a storyteller, yet he has become one of Louisiana’s greatest. He lets his stories flow naturally, honoring Louisiana’s culture and his Native American heritage. Speaking from personal experiences, Perkins is able to look at a person and let the spirit of the moment create a story in his mind. “Some people think our history is in the past,” Perkins says, “but we are making it now.” Through his storytelling and different art forms, Perkins continues to weave stories for our future generations.
