This is the first video in a series of videos that I am putting together which will cover some of the contents of Bertrand Russell's 1903 book titled The Principles of Mathematics.

In this book, Bertrand Russell argues that pure mathematics is nothing more than a branch of logic and sets about reducing mathematics to a series of purely logical principles. Sadly, though, for Mr. Russell, just before the book was first published he discovered his devastating logical paradox which put a big spanner in the works. Nevertheless, Mr. Russell sticks to his guns and insists that, with a few modifications to his original thesis, mathematics can still be reduced to purely logical principles. This book outlines many of those logical principles that Russell believes form the basis of pure mathematics.

This video starts, naturally, with Part I - The Indefinables of Mathematics. This is one of the longer parts of this book and so, this video covers only chapters 1 to 5; the remaining chapters of this section will be covered in a second video. In this video therefore I take a look at the following chapters:

Chapter 1 - Definition of Pure Mathematics
Chapter 2 - Symbolic Logic
Chapter 3 - Implication and Formal Implication
Chapter 4 - Proper Names, Adjectives and Verbs
Chapter 5 - Denoting

I personally found this book very tough going due to its, at times, philosophical nature. However, even though Principia Mathematica supersedes this work, I definitely recommend reading this book (at least in part) if you are interested in getting a more complete understanding of the Principia Mathematica and logicism in general.
