How to Replace Broken Furniture Parts - Chair Stretcher | Woodworking Furniture Restoration

Описание к видео How to Replace Broken Furniture Parts - Chair Stretcher | Woodworking Furniture Restoration

See how to replace a chair stretcher (aka chair rung) when it’s broken or missing. The function of a chair stretcher is to stabilize and support the legs of the chair. This prevents the chair legs from being pried apart where they join the seat or chair apron. Once a chair stretcher is broken or missing, the chair will quickly develop loose joints, which will eventually break if the chair continues to be used. Repairing the stretcher is important to keep the chair usable.

The steps to replace a missing or broken chair stretcher are:
- Label all the parts of the chair
- Disassemble the chair
- Select wood of the same species (i.e., for an oak chair, find a piece of oak)
- Rip the wood down to the right dimensions
- Measure the stretcher length and any angles
- Drill holes for the dowels
- Cut the stretcher to length, at the right angle
- Test fit the stretcher
- Stain and finish the stretcher to match the chair
- Reassemble the chair with property applied wood glue and clamps
