Assassin's Creed Odyssey is an open world historical action RPG game with stealth elements. The game is a prequel to the whole franchise, taking place in the 5th century BCE, primarily during the Peloponnesian War, but also has brief segments in the Greco-Persian Wars, and the present day. This is the prologue sequence of the game.

The prologue takes place in the year 480 BCE and features the Battle of Thermopylae, also known as the Battle of 300 Spartans. The player character in this brief segment is king Leonidas himself (He is the grandfather of the game's true protagonist.) Thermopylae is one of the most famous "last stand" battles in history. King Leonidas I of Sparta and his army of 300 Spartans faced a much larger Persian army led by king Xerxes I of Persia, in the narrow mountain pass of Thermopylae.

Miraculously, the Spartans were able to hold them off for days and cause masssive casualties to the Persian army. They might even have won, if they hadn't been betrayed by one of their own. A soldier called Ephialtes of Trachis betrayed them. He told Xerxes about a secret path behind the mountain, that would allow the Persians to flank the Spartans. Because of his betrayal, the Spartans were overwhelmed and slain to the last man.

But all was not lost. Because of the heroic sacrifice of the 300, the Persian army was so severely weakened, that the Greeks were able to defeat them at the Battle of Salamis, driving Xerxes and his invading Persian out of Greece for good.

It is unknown how many soldiers were in the Persian army. Herodotos claims there were 3,4 million of them, but this is thought to be an overestimation. Modern estimates say about 100000-300000 men. Among the Persian army were also their feared elite soldiers, called Immortals.
