Our story begins not in Scandinavia, but in the harsh and beautiful land the Norse called Greenland. The settlement of Greenland was itself an act of extraordinary daring and desperation. In the year 982 AD, a man named Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for three years. His crime was manslaughter, the result of a bloody feud, a common enough occurrence in Viking society. But Erik was not a man to sit idle. He had heard rumors of a land far to the west, glimpsed by sailors blown off course in storms. He decided to use his exile to find it. Erik sailed west from Iceland with a small crew, crossing six hundred miles of open ocean. What he found was a massive island, the largest in the world, covered almost entirely in ice and snow. But along its southwestern coast, he discovered fjords with green valleys, grasslands where sheep could graze, and waters rich with seals and fish. It was harsh, but it was habitable.
