Meet Martin
Martin: My name is Martin. I’m an Assistant Inspector with HM Inspectorate of Probation. The core aspect of my work is to go to different parts of England and Wales as part of a team to assess adult probation and youth offending services.

How did you come to work for the Inspectorate?
Martin: I’ve been with HM Inspectorate of Probation now for just over two years on secondment from my home area where I was a senior probation officer with a team of staff who had their own caseloads. Other members of the team were probation officers, and [other members of the team were] senior probation officers and we’ve also got team members who worked in youth offending, as well.

How do you achieve a good work/life balance?
Martin: Work/life balance, for me, was a very important consideration before joining HM Inspectorate of Probation. I discussed this with my partner because both of my children were in junior school at that time. And, with the help of extended family, we’ve been able to manage my being away from Monday to Friday — but there have been periods when I’ve been at home, as well, and I could take the kids to school and pick them up. And I know several of my female colleagues, as well, are in a similar situation and with the right support at home, you can do the work and you can have quality time.

What are the top three things about working at the Inspectorate?
Martin: The top three things with regard to working for the Inspectorate, for me, have been the experience, and that’s been: meeting different people and seeing how different organisations operate; also the travel aspect— I’ve been to towns and cities I’d never seen before and really enjoyed it; and the third one is probably the team itself— we’re a very close-knit team and, you know, very motivated to help people change and change things for the better.
