In 2014, Tian Zhiwei, a bird protector in north China’s Hebei Province, discovered an injured bar-headed goose. He rescued the animal and brought it back to his farm, where the goose became good friends with two other domestic geese.

When Tian tried to send back the bar-headed goose to its hometown, he found eggs of the bar-headed goose and his goose in the farm.

The eggs failed to hatch at first. Tian later put the eggs in an incubation box to hatch them artificially. And on May 3, 2017, a goose was born. The species is very rare as it is not common for bar-headed goose to mate with domestic goose. However, whether the newly born goose is able to reproduce remains a question.
