ঢাকা থেকে জনসংখ্যার চাপ কমাতে রাজধানী উন্নয়ন কর্তৃপক্ষ পূর্বাচলকে একটি আদর্শ নগর হিসেবে গড়ে তোলার কাজ শুরু হয় ২০০২ সালে। কিন্তু বাস্তবায়নে ধীরগতি ও প্রকল্পের নকশায় বারবার পরিবর্তন আনায় পূর্বাচল শেষ পর্যন্ত অপরিকল্পিত রাজধানীরই একটি বর্ধিত অংশে পরিণত হবে, এমন আশঙ্কা করছেন নগর পরিকল্পনাবিদরা।

পাঁচ বার নকশায় পরিবর্তন আর নতুন সুবিধা সংযোজনে এই প্রকল্পের ব্যয় বেড়েছে তিন গুন। তারপরও খুব শিগগির পূর্বাচল বসবাসের উপযোগী হবে, এমন কিছু চোখে পড়ে না। কবে পূর্বাচল প্রকল্পের কাজ শেষ হবে? পূর্বাচল কি রাজধানীর আরেকটি বিশৃঙ্খল অংশে পরিণত হতে যাচ্ছে?

Purbachal project: Planning took up 20 years

Purbachal as a "new town" was supposed to ease Dhaka's burden of overpopulation. But according to urban planners, protracted delay in implementation and continuous modifications in project design are likely to render Purbachal just as disorganised as Dhaka.

Costs have increased threefold due to five design revisions and facility additions, with nothing to show for it yet. When will Purbachal be able to sustain a permanent population? Will Purbachal indeed be as chaotic as Dhaka city?

Asifur Rahman, reporter of The Daily Star, did an investigation on the present physical progress and likelihood of the Purbachal project’s completion in this Star News Plus.
