Analysis of lunar rock samples from the Apollo and Luna missions revealed that there was volcanism 3 billion years ago on the moon, after which it cooled rapidly. But analysis of new samples from Chang’e-5 mission shows that volcanism persisted a billion years afterward, when we believe there wasn’t enough heat for it on the moon.
