How to Clean a Big Green Egg | Deep Cleaning your Big Green Egg

If you're having trouble getting your egg hot enough, the temperature doesn't climb at a reasonable rate or it's losing temperature part way through your cook, your egg might need to be cleaned. Ash can block the airflow coming up through your grate or your firebox but there's an easy fix for it.

Level 1 Cleaning: Every time you cook on your Big Green Egg, you should rake the leftover coals across the bottom grate to knock down ash (or if you have a basket instead, give it a shake). Make sure the ash collected in the bottom isn't blocking the bottom air hole and you're good to go.

Level 2 Cleaning: Every 3-4 times you cook, you should use the fire tool that came with your Big Green Egg and remove the ash from the bottom. Or if you have a removable basket that holds your charcoal, pull it out and scoop out the ash.

Level 3 Cleaning: Every 4 - 6 months, every spring, after heavy use or when you're really having trouble getting up to high temps, you should take the inside of your egg apart. Remove the grill, all the charcoal, the fire ring and fire box and use a vacuum to suck out all the ash that has built up on the bottom and in behind the ceramic interior parts. No ash blocking air holes = more airflow.
