Описание к видео Better together: Finding community in the deep sea for Earth Day

Fish schools and squid socials, collections of corals and crowds of marching crabs—the deep sea teems with life. MBARI’s advanced underwater robots provide a glimpse of the communities flourishing in the largest living space on Earth.

We’ve filmed many astonishing gatherings of animals in the depths of Monterey Bay and beyond. Hotspots of life emerge from the dark when scavengers find a feast on the seafloor or when small fishes seek safety in numbers.

But our ocean and its inhabitants face a rising tide of threats. Pollution, overfishing, and climate change make for an uncertain future. We’re working to understand the deep sea and how these communities are navigating a changing ocean. All life, including us, depends on a healthy ocean. Together, we can be ocean champions. This Earth Day, we’re reflecting on our close connection to the animals and environments that thrive in the ocean’s inky depths. Their future is in our hands now.
