The DART mission was the first planetary defense test in human history, designed to see whether we could intentionally alter the path of an asteroid by hitting it with a spacecraft. According to NASA, DART launched in November 2021 and successfully impacted the asteroid moonlet Dimorphos on September 26, 2022, demonstrating that a kinetic impactor can change an asteroid’s motion in space.

DART targeted a binary asteroid system:
Didymos — the larger asteroid
Dimorphos — its smaller moonlet, about 160 meters across

By striking Dimorphos at high speed, DART shortened its orbital period around Didymos, proving that asteroid deflection is possible — a major milestone for protecting Earth from future threats.
