World:
Carduus acanthoides is native from France, Italy, and western Turkey; through Russia and Kazakhstan to China.

Location:
In it’s native range Carduus is found in open grasslands and disturbed areas. In non-native ranges it’s a weed of annual grasslands, roadsides, fields and pastures.

Lifetime:
The Carduus acanthoides is a flowering plant that takes two years to complete its biological lifecycle. In the first year, the plant grows leaves, stems, and roots. In the second Year, the plant flowers, producing fruits and seeds before it finally dies.

Height:
Carduus acanthoides may exceed from 0,30 to 1,20 meters (4 ft) in height.

Flowers:
The flowers are purple and smaller than most comparative thistle species, generally 2,5 cm (1 in) wide. Flower heads are solitary or in clusters of 2 to 5. The bracts are narrow and spreading with very short spiny tips.

Seeds:
The seeds are a dry, one-seeded fruit with a thin wall that does not open at Maturity. (Like a sunflower seed). The achenes are 2 to 3 mm long, and they are light brown with faint lengthwise stripes. A single plant is capable of producing up to 1,000 seeds. The seeds are mainly dispersed by wind.

Leaves:
Leaves are deeply lobed, with lobes further segmented, wavy around the edges, and very spiny. Lower leaves are up to 20 cm (8 in) long, becoming much shorter in the upper plant. Leaf undersides can be either smooth or have dense, bristly hairs, especially along major veins. Stems are densely covered with leaves. They may also be bristly hairy and are usually heavily branched in the upper plant.

Roots:
Carduus acanthoides has a thick and fleshy taproot.
