The Rock of Cashel: A guide and brief history

Описание к видео The Rock of Cashel: A guide and brief history

The Rock of Cashel is deservedly one of Ireland’s most popular tourist destinations. Built on a rocky outcrop, the iconic round tower and cathedral stand out against the Tipperary countryside. Although it is regarded as a religious site, it is actually a complex ensemble of buildings, including a castle, built between the 11th and the 15th centuries, the most striking of which is the magnificent Cormac's Chapel. Before becoming a religious site it was a political one, as it was the seat of the Eóganacht, rulers of Munster. It actually only became a religious site in 1101 when Muircheartach Ua Brian granted it to the church, in a political manoeuvre which striped the Eóganacht (in the process of becoming the MacCarthys) of their political seat and reputed ancestral birthplace.
