The Battle of Colachel is the story of the great naval war that happened at Colachel, a sleepy coastal town in Kanyakumari district of modern-day Tamil Nadu. This war was more like a continuous exchange of gunfire that had taken place. So rather than a ‘battle’ it was a prolonged confrontation. In 1729, Anizham Thirunnal Marthanda Varma, a courageous young king extended the boundaries of his kingdom by conquering the neighboring territories, kingdoms and principalities. The Travancore King decided to conquer Odanad, the place known for its black pepper production, at a time when the Dutch enjoyed monopoly over the trade of black pepper.
