DIY $20 Rifle-Rated Body Armor Test (Can It Stop 5.56?)

Today on Civilian Tactical Construction Channel Edition, we’re putting a crazy idea to the test: can you make rifle-rated body armor for just $20 worth of materials? Using nothing more than duct tape, a fiberglass welding blanket from Harbor Freight, and ceramic tiles from Home Depot, we built a homemade plate to see if it could actually stop bullets.

We’ll test it against:
• 🔫 9mm pistol (Beretta APX)
• 🔫 .223 / 5.56 standard ball ammo
• 🔫 5.56 green tip M855

The build process is simple—stack the tiles, wrap them in the welding blanket, seal with duct tape, and you’ve got your DIY armor plate. Shockingly, the results were better than expected. It stopped pistol rounds and even standard 5.56, though green tip finally punched through. While this is not life-saving body armor you should rely on, it opens the door for practical experiments like reinforcing doors, DIY bulletproof walls, or budget home protection projects.
