The 93rd Academy Award nominations are already making history ahead of the ceremony. “Judas and the Black Messiah” is up for Best Picture, making it the first nominee in that category to have all Black producers. It tells the story of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and the FBI informant William O’Neal who infiltrated the movement. Hampton was just 21 years old in 1969, when police shot and killed him in his bed. Shaka King directed the film and is also one of the movie’s four writers. Soledad O’Brien recently spoke with him about the importance of telling this story more than 50 years later.
