We knew that Audi would be showing off their new racecar, the Audi RS5 DTM at Geneva, but we got a surprise when a consumer model - the Audi RS5 Coupe - was unveiled at the show as well.

Since Quattro rebranded as Audi Sport, it’s been a short wait to find out what car would be the first model to be produced by the division – the answer is the RS5 Coupe, rounding out the lineup of the redesigned A5 range and making a big splash in terms of power. This second-generation RS5 has an extreme sporty design that differentiates it from the S5 below it, and that’s likely down to the fact that ex-Lambo exec Stephan Winkelmann taking the reigns of the Audi Sport division to make sure everything goes smoothly.

The new RS5 Coupe is the first Audi Sport model that is design with the new RS idiom. The car’s all-new 2.9 TFSI V6 biturbo engine produces 444bhp with quattro technology as standard. “The new Audi RS 5 Coupé is the gran turismo among the RS models from Audi Sport. The high-performance Coupé combines elegant aesthetics with high everyday usability. The car’s V6 biturbo has been developed from the ground up and provides significantly more performance coupled with higher efficiency,” said Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Audi Sport.

The new air inlets are huge and the familiar honeycomb grille is almost identical to the new-shape S5 models, although the RS5 does have some tweaks to the design that make it look more aggressive. The grille is much wider and flatter than in the A5 and S5, so this is definitely identifiable as an RS model. There are additional air intakes and outlets near the headlights and tinted bezels differentiate the optional Matrix LED headlights. To make the car more sporty in appearance, Audi Sport has added RS-specific diffuser insert, oval tailpipes for the RS exhaust system and a surface-mounted spoiler lip.

19-inch alloys are standard, but 20-inch wheels will be available as an option. All-in-all, this does look like a powerful car on the exterior, and a new feature is the carbon-fibre roof option that stands out in a crowd of body-colour and sunroof options.

Remember, your car needs to look good when you’re going 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds.
