The Chola period Mahadevar shrine is Apsidal (horseshoe-shaped), Dvi-​tala (two-story) vimana and an Ardha Mandapa. Hence the vimana is called Gajaprishta, meaning 'back of an elephant as it is curved at the rear. This form of architecture is observed in a few other Chola temples in and around Chennai (Tondaimandalam). The entire temple structure is made out of granite.

The village is called Edayarpakkam, and the inscriptions tell the name of this village as "Edayarruppakkam". It is also known as "Jeyangkonda Cholamandal Manavir-kottam Purisai Nadu Purisai" and "Jayangkonda Cholamandalathu Manavir-kottam Purisai Nadu Idayaruppakkam". The historical name of the town is Raja Vidyadhara Chadur Vedi Mangalam.

The external walls of the Vimana and Ardha Mandapa have five deeply cut niches flanked by ornate square pilasters. The Goshta on the south and north Ardha Mandapa walls houses the Chola style statues of Vinayaka and Durga, respectively. The southern vimana wall houses the sanctum of the unique Dakshinamurthy, seated on a pedestal under the Kallala tree (Banyan tree). The northern vimana wall has Brahma in the Goshta, and the Goshta of the western vimana wall is empty.

Four inscriptions belonging to the later Chola period are found in this Mahadevar temple. Especially that of Kulottunga Chola I (1070 - 1120 A.D.), Kulottunga Chola II (1133 - 1150 A.D.) and Rajadhiraja Chola II (1163 - 1178) are found at Edayarpakkam Mahadevar temple near Kanchipuram.

A small Vishnu idol is also found in the shrine. This Vishnu idol was found during an excavation in the recent past, and someone has placed Vishnu adjacent to Shiva Linga.
