This is super fiddly but if you are stubborn like me it can be done. Open the label cartridge, re-attach the tape to the waste spool, and "reassembly is the reverse of disassembly".
Sorry that my hand blocks the view sometimes (2 minutes total) - feel free not to watch it and throw your cartridge away instead. You're only going to do this 'by feel' with your cartridge in front of you, sharing this to capture the main points because I oculdn't find anything else on the web.
