On the night of September 4, Devin Bryant Johnson, 32, brutally attacked his mother Rosemary, stabbing her repeatedly in the head and neck. The attack occurred in the home that she had hoped would be a place of safety. Rosemary Johnson, a loving mother and grandmother, was no stranger to difficulty in her relationship with Devin, but nothing could have prepared her or anyone around her for the violence that unfolded that night.

💔 A History of Abuse & Domestic Violence:
For months, Rosemary had been enduring more than just the pressures of being a mother. Devin had been exhibiting aggressive behavior that was escalating rapidly. From January 2024 to March 2024, Devin had attacked his mother, physically assaulting her and even trapping her in a recliner by cutting off the power in the home. He would destroy her belongings, including her cell phone and mobility aids, rendering her vulnerable in a home that should have been her safe haven.

📞 Attempts to Protect Herself:
Rosemary, fearful for her own safety and that of her grandchildren, filed a petition for protection against domestic violence. She reported these attacks to the police, yet the protection she sought and the warning signs she raised went unnoticed by the system until it was too late. Despite taking steps to protect herself by seeking a restraining order in March 2024, no one could predict the horror that would unfold just months later.

💡 Evidence Found:
When police arrived on the scene, they found Rosemary Johnson’s body, cold and lifeless, a mother and grandmother gone too soon. Blood was found throughout the house, and Devin’s shoes and vehicle were covered in it. After attacking his mother, Devin fled the scene, a trace of his violence left behind. A bloody trail led investigators to him, but the horrors didn’t end there.

⚖️ Investigation & Arrest:
Devin fled the scene after the fatal attack but was apprehended by local law enforcement in Collier County, where he engaged in a violent struggle with deputies. Devin resisted arrest, attempted to flee, and even tried to disarm one of the officers. His aggressive behavior during his arrest raised concerns about his state of mind and further supported his history of violence and erratic behavior. Devin is now charged with second-degree murder for the killing of his mother Rosemary and attempted murder for stabbing her children.

💔 Family and Community Reactions:
The news of Rosemary’s death sent shockwaves through her family and the community. Her grandchildren were left traumatized by the loss of their grandmother, and the town of Cape Coral, known for its quiet and peaceful atmosphere, was shaken to its core.
