to keep our promises like steady clocks.
there, you would not be a lesson but a presence,
your hands familiar as the map of my own palm.

i imagine us walking quieter streets,
the kind that remember how to hold conversation,
where laughter isn’t sharp with fear and goodbyes come late.
we would learn each other’s small rituals
the way you smooth your sleeve when you’re unsure,
the song you hum when the rain begins
and these tiny truths would build a life out of gentle things.

here, in this life, we learned other lessons:
how to leave, how to mute the rooms, how to tidy memories.
i carry the version that almost was like a folded letter,
an ache pressed flat so it fits in my pocket.
sometimes i open it and pretend the ink still smells like you
and for a breath, that other life is mine.
