As realm-renown bard and poet laureate Flo Rida famously wrote, “apple bottom jeans, lil bat fur, floating eye ball, got me lookin at her.” ahead of it’s time, few knew that it actually described Arcane Eye.

Today we’re looking at Arcane Eye, a 4th level spell from the school of Divination in DnD 5e. Available to Wizards, Artificers, and Clerics in the Knowledge and Arcana Domains, Arcane Eye lets you create an invisible hovering eye ball. A concentration spell that lasts an hour, Arcane Eye puts the eye in team.

Where my brain goes with Arcane Eye is the scene in Prometheus where the explorers want to get a view of the entire cave network, so they send some drones, lovingly called “pups” out ahead to get the rendering. The drones set off through the tunnels and send the data up to Edris Elba, who then gets a look at the entire dungeon, er, cave system.

Same concept with Arcane Eye, except the eye is real smol and invisible. And there aren’t any aliens…in most cases. Our poll on Threads was pretty split on common uses, with most pointing to scouting out a dangerous area, and dungeon mapping as their primary uses.

This spell has a lot of “can I” questions, followed by “no” responses, so it’s an important spell for DMs to understand in terms of limitations. Arcane Eye is another spell most folks think of as something you’ll do outside of combat, but only taking one action to cast, it might be necessary mid-battle if you need to look for a quick exit further down the hall.
